Are you looking for an inclusive faith group?
We are the Quaker Action Society. We meet once a week, on Mondays at 6pm, where we have a 30 minute silent Meeting for Worship, followed by discussion and a (vegan/vegetarian) meal.
Meeting for Worship is were we sit in a shared silence, waiting together, listening to promptings within us. If someone feels moved to speak, they stand (if they are able) and share their truth with the group. This is known among Quakers as 'ministry'. The Meeting ends when two Quakers shake hands.
So what do Quakers believe?
There is a common joke that you ask 10 different Quakers a question and you get 10 different answers.
This doesn’t mean we disagree, but that we accept that everyone's interpretation is different and how people experience faith and life is individual. While the majority of Quakers are Christian (or Christian-aligned), many Quakers wouldn't describe themselves as such, with a portion of Quakers who also are non-theist. This means that they are guided by a source other than God. There are also Quakers who are rooted in practices or denominations outside of these, such as Quaker-Buddhists, Qu-Anglicans and Qu-ethodists.
So, what beliefs do we all hold?
Quakers have a commitment to values, known as testimonies. These are guiding principles in our lives and our communities, the acronym for these is SPICES:
- Simplicity
- Peace
- Integrity
- Community
- Equality
- Sustainability
We are inclusive to people of all varieties: whatever your gender, sexuality, disability/neurodiversity, faith or background - you are welcome, affirmed and celebrated! We are tic-friendly, and have people who have tics in our Meetings already. Feel free to sit however you feel comfortable, there is no requirement to sit in a chair, i.e. you can sit on the floor, lay down, and have fidget toys.
Newcomers and Quaker-curious people are always welcome to come and see what it is like, to stay as long as they wish and leave whenever they want to.
