Ultimate Frisbee

If you want to explore a new sport, Ultimate Frisbee is the one to try! Ultimate involves a lot of cardio and can be quite intense, but it’s also very newcomer friendly.

Ultimate is an exciting, mixed gender, non-contact team sport, played by thousands all over the world in Open, Mixed and Women’s teams. Ultimate is a fast-paced game, demanding its players to develop razor-sharp throwing skills and immense stamina and agility. The sport is self-refereed and promotes Spirit Of The Game (SOTG); this means players know the game and rules inside out and understand the meaning of fair play. Being self refereed requires opposing teams to respect and listen to each other when a call is made.

Aye-Aye

Aye-Aye is our club name, after the nocturnal primate which is our mascot! Much mystery surrounds the origin of this choice by the founders of the club. We have all learned to love these strange creatures and are always looking forward to welcoming new aye-ayes into the family.

Aye-Aye is a unique club because there is something for everyone. If you are the competitive type, there are plenty of serious and fun tournaments, for all ability levels, as well as our frequent BUCS fixtures. If you just want to come along for the ride, we have plenty of (infamous) socials and relaxed chuck-abouts.

Social life

You will meet lots of amazing people in our continuously expanding club!

We are known for our inclusive, friendly atmosphere, exemplified by our (often themed) socials, allowing the newcomers to make friends with the existing members and become integrated into the large closely-knit family that is Aye-Aye. Our plan for socials throughout the year is extensive, so come along and participate!

Training

  • Colney Lane (outdoor sessions)

    • Wednesday: 14:00 - 16:00

    • Saturday: 12:00-14:00

  • Sports Park Sports Hall

    Sunday: 20:20 - 22:20 - Beginners Training

Competitions

We enter competitive indoor regional events which occur over weekends in the men's, women's and mixed divisions, which lead onto National events. In the year just gone, we had one of our most successful years, entering 6 teams total for the indoor regional events, a first for our women's team to have 2 teams going to an indoor regionals event, and 3 teams for nationals. We came 1st at Mixed Indoor Regionals, 2nd at Men's Indoor Nationals Division 2 and 11th at Mixed indoor Nationals Division 1.

We also play in an OPEN division outdoor BUCS fixtures on Wednesday afternoons, ALL players are invited to play (both men's and women's divisions).

Other tournaments we participate in are beginners tournaments, they're great for improving newcomer's frisbee skills (and partying prowess)!

Aye-Aye Open

Aye-Aye Open (AAO) is our very own fun tournament, normally organised in the Spring. Anyone can play in this tournament because we are the hosts! Teams from all over the country come to the Sports-Park for some top quality indoor Frisbee played in themed outfits followed by a big social.

The Real Cost of Sport

The 'Real Cost of Sport' initiative, a project reviewed and rebranded by the Students' Union in partnership with uea+sport, aims to provide prospective members with a comprehensive overview of the potential costs of joining their chosen sports club. This year, I have worked closely with the clubs to ensure these tables are as accurate and up-to-date as possible.

This guide is intended to serve as a general reference. The compulsory cost includes the uea+sport membership fee of £55, which is a one-time payment that covers membership across all clubs.

When considering additional expenses, it is important to note that some clubs may not have any extra costs, while others might incur additional fees. These costs often depend on the level of competitiveness within the sport; recreational or social participation is generally less expensive. Additionally, some equipment, such as shoes or gum shields, may be used across multiple sports, potentially reducing overall expenses.

For any specific questions or further information about a particular club, please contact the club directly or contact us at union.opportunities@uea.ac.uk for more details about the project.

All the best,

Olivia Hunt
