MAIN EVENTS!

BUCS! Each year, in the first semester, UEA Surf Club competes against universities across the UK down at the iconic surfing location of Fistral Beach in Newquay for the yearly BUCS competiton. Nearly 400 competitors take part each year from across the UK!

THE INTERNATIONAL TRIP! Held each year in the easter holidays, our one week international trip is argubaly the highlight of the year! Previous destinations have included Morrocco, Fuertaventura and Portugal. As well as surfing the trips offer plenty opportunities to explore new activities, such as quad biking, day trips, and camel riding!

SWIM TRAINING! Being a good surfer requires you to be a strong swimmer and to get to grips with paddling techniques, so we train as a club every other Friday in the Sportpark swimming pool, improving our technique, encouraging and learning from each other. It provides a great opportunity to come together as a club in the water at points of the year surf is unavailable! Currently there are two swim sessions every other Friday, one from 19:30-20:120 and another from 20:30-21:20.

WEEKLY STRENGTH & CONDITIONING TRAINING! As well as weekly swim training sessions, we now hold Strength & Conditioning sessions every Tuesday from 18:00-19:00 in the Congregation Hall to help with improving our fitness and working on body strength, to make those popups as smooth as they can be!

CROMER SURF LESSONS! As we are a beginner friendly club, we offer beginner surf lessons at two points in the year - October and February. They are held in partnership with Glide Surf School down at Cromer Beach and are a great opportunity for people who want to try out suring at a low cost, and to meet people with the same mindset!

SOBER SOCIALS! We appreciate there are many people who would rather not drink, so we run many socials that do not involve alcohol; including BBQs with other clubs, trips to the trampolining centre and beach cleans in conjunction with some of UEA's environmental societies and the charity Surfers Against Sewage, as we care deeply about protecting the oceans that we love and depend upon!

The Real Cost of Sport

The 'Real Cost of Sport' initiative, a project reviewed and rebranded by the Students' Union in partnership with uea+sport, aims to provide prospective members with a comprehensive overview of the potential costs of joining their chosen sports club. This year, I have worked closely with the clubs to ensure these tables are as accurate and up-to-date as possible.

This guide is intended to serve as a general reference. The compulsory cost includes the uea+sport membership fee of £55, which is a one-time payment that covers membership across all clubs.

When considering additional expenses, it is important to note that some clubs may not have any extra costs, while others might incur additional fees. These costs often depend on the level of competitiveness within the sport; recreational or social participation is generally less expensive. Additionally, some equipment, such as shoes or gum shields, may be used across multiple sports, potentially reducing overall expenses.

For any specific questions or further information about a particular club, please contact the club directly or contact us at union.opportunities@uea.ac.uk for more details about the project.

All the best,

Olivia Hunt
