Welcome to UEA Fencing!

Who are we?

We are the UEA Fencing club and provide an opportunity for students to take part in the fast-paced combat sport of Fencing. Whether you're an expert that wouldn't look out of place at the Olympics, have tried the sport before but couldn't continue, or if you've always wanted to see if you could become a master sword wielder, UEA fencing is the place for you. Beginners, experienced, advanced, and social fencers are all welcome and have access to all our kit so no need to purchase anything, other than the membership fee. All three weapons are used and taught at the club: Foil, Epee, and Sabre. UEA Fencing is consistently one of UEA's top-performing BUCS teams and is ideal for the aspiring and the accomplished fencer alike. As well as fencing, we have an active social side to the club organizing a variety of socials throughout the year including such as bowling, movie nights, special occasion meals, and our trips to the SU bar after our weekly sessions.

When our our regular sessions?

Mondays            19:40-22:20   SP Hall 2

Wednesdays      19:40-22:20   SP Hall 1 (with Norfolk Fencing Club)

Fencing introduction course

If you’ve never fenced before (Or haven’t in a long time/want a refresh), this section is for you! Also, you can attend whether you have been to one of our tasters or not.

The foil beginners course runs for 5 weeks and will get you to grips with using foils as well as an introduction to Saber and Epee in the final week. The course will take you from never having fenced before, to being able to fence freely with the rest of the club.

To take part, you must purchase the beginner's course membership from our SU page, at £30. If you are attending the beginners’ course, you do NOT at any point need to purchase the standard fencing membership. If you wish to continue fencing with us after the beginners’ course has ended, simply purchase the £15 top-up!  Please aim to arrive at 19:15 before the session starts each evening so we can gear you up with all your kit.

INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED MEMBERS

For everyone who has previously been a member or is already an experienced fencer you are welcom to join mid semseter, just message us on instagram or email us to register your intrest.

Our regular club nights consist of free fencing, ladders/poules, and coaching by our experienced members. On Wednesdays, we join Norfolk Fencing Club at their weekly sessions which have a wider variety of fencers and coaches.

It is not mandatory to attend the Wednesday sessions with Norfolk, yet we have a special deal with them that only costs £10 a semester and provides a lot of extra training and new people to meet.

Club membership is £40 for the year, and UEASport Membership will also need to be purchased (as with every UEA sports club).

The Real Cost of Sport

The 'Real Cost of Sport' initiative, a project reviewed and rebranded by the Students' Union in partnership with uea+sport, aims to provide prospective members with a comprehensive overview of the potential costs of joining their chosen sports club. This year, I have worked closely with the clubs to ensure these tables are as accurate and up-to-date as possible.

This guide is intended to serve as a general reference. The compulsory cost includes the uea+sport membership fee of £55, which is a one-time payment that covers membership across all clubs.

When considering additional expenses, it is important to note that some clubs may not have any extra costs, while others might incur additional fees. These costs often depend on the level of competitiveness within the sport; recreational or social participation is generally less expensive. Additionally, some equipment, such as shoes or gum shields, may be used across multiple sports, potentially reducing overall expenses.

For any specific questions or further information about a particular club, please contact the club directly or contact us at union.opportunities@uea.ac.uk for more details about the project.

All the best,

Olivia Hunt
