what is ‘reclaim the night’?
Reclaim the Night is a movement that originated in Leeds in 1977 as part of the Women's Liberation Movement. It emerged in response to the ‘Yorkshire Ripper’ murders and police advisories urging women to stay indoors after dark. Refusing to accept restrictions on their freedom, women organised marches to assert their right to safely occupy public spaces at night. These demonstrations not only drew attention to the dangers women face in cities after dark but also challenged societal norms that sought to limit women's autonomy and movement.

why we march
To demand our right to feel safe at night
Women, non-binary people, and marginalised genders are often told to avoid going out alone after dark. Instead of addressing the root causes of violence, the burden is placed on us to modify our behaviour. We march to challenge this and demand real action for safer streets.
To stand against gender-based violence
Harassment, assault, and violence should never be normalised. From street harassment to domestic abuse, gender-based violence remains a serious issue. Reclaim the Night is about raising awareness, breaking the silence, and demanding change.
To make our voices heard
For too long, safety concerns have been ignored or dismissed. We march to demand action from local authorities, institutions, and communities to prioritise our right to safety and freedom.
Because we shouldn’t have to change our behaviour to stay safe
Why should we be told to walk in well-lit areas, carry keys between our fingers, or avoid wearing certain clothes? The responsibility should be on those who commit harm—not on those at risk. We march to challenge victim-blaming and fight for a future where safety is a right, not a privilege.
