VOTE NATHAN FOR NO GRAD FEES

Hi! My name’s Nathan and I’ve been your Welfare, Community and Diversity Officer for the last year.

I’ve spent this year fighting for students and making sure you get the uni experience you deserve! I’ve worked to get students a nightbus service, campaigned to reopen the pharmacy on campus, raised awareness on campus for disabled and international students and gave away 1000 free meals to students.

I’ve been working on some exciting projects, but the jobs not over yet!  It would be an honour to continue helping students for another year- here are my plans:

  • The Nightbus is nearly here: I’ve been supporting Luke (Activities & Opportunities Officer) this year– I know how to finish this project. I’ve worked with local councillors, our MP, and the university to get this sorted. I’d love to finish the job!
  • Affordable food on campus: Being able to eat on campus shouldn’t be a luxury! I’ll work with UEA to bring back the evening campus kitchen discount and provide more affordable food options throughout the day.
  • INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SUPPORT: I've been working hard this year to protect international students. I will fight for a reintroduction of the hardship fund, more affordable double rooms on campus, and lobby the government to increase the working hours cap.
  • UEA Foodbank: This year I’ve worked to give as much free food to students as possible, and the demand has been overwhelming. I’ll work to set up a foodbank on campus to make sure the most vulnerable UEA students aren’t going hungry.
  • Cost-of-living support: It keeps getting harder to be a student, and the government refuses to help. I’ve been going to parliament, lobbying MPs, and working with NUS to make the government do the right thing and support students.
  • Protect our venues: The LCR and Waterfront are at the heart of student life at UEA. I’ll work with the university to protect and future proof our venues, so that students can keep enjoying them for many years to come.
  • Change UEA SU agreements: The SU is made to follow a near decade old agreement with the university called the ‘memorandum of understanding.’ I’ll work to change this and make sure that it’s in the best interest of students.
  • Closer ties with NUS: The National Union of Students fight for us every day. I’ve been working hard to forge closer ties for our students, and even hosted the vice-president this year! Going forward I want to get UEASU as involved as possible.
  • SOCA Scheme: I’ve been working with our POC Officer to recruit more student of colour ambassadors than ever before! I’m committed to closing the degree awarding gap and I plan to continue expanding the scheme next year.

**UPDATE** Since writing this manifesto, UEA has chosen to charge guests to attend graduation. This will clearly impact the poorest students the most. As Welfare Officer, I will fight this stupid decision. If UEA doesn't reverse this announcement, I will put on alternative FREE graduation ceremonies.
