Vote Serene for C&D 2023! #DontBeMeanStickWithSerene!

Hi there! I’m your current Campaigns & Democracy Officer and I am re-running because the job is not done! If re-elected I will continue to fight to empower student voices, and work to improve your student experience.

While C&D Officer:

I’ve worked to follow through on my promise to advocate for students, enact changes to make student life easier, and support student goals and campaigns.

I’ve worked to ensure:

  • SU student staff can get Trade Union representation,
  • SU commitment to returning to paying student-staff a living wage,
  • That warm spaces are available on campus,
  • Our code of conduct works for you, changing our processes making them simpler and more efficient,
  • Student groups are easier to run, introducing new ways to run committee elections,

I’ve also been busy:

  • Supporting student activism, helping organise protests and events,
  • Campaigning with local renting charities pushing for local and national renter's rights,
  • Advocating internationally for more paid/funded international opportunities,
  • Pushing to reform the University's Drug Policy,
  • Participating on UEA’s Anti-Racism Taskforce, lobbying for more action on UEA’s Decolonising the Curriculum and Anti-Racism work,
  • Campaigning on the Cost of Living for more welfare and financial support from the government and UEA,
  • Developing our Democracy to be more understandable and accessible, to make your representative body a space for Students by Students where you are supported and empowered to make the changes you want to see!

Experience:

I've been campaigning since my first year, calling for more power to students to ensure your Union represents you, gaining real-life experience advocating for student needs and managing SU democracy.

Standing as:

  • Part-Time Student Officer: responsible for representing students,
  • Trustee of the Student Union: Overseeing Union management and strategy,
  • Democratic Procedures Committee Chair: Responsible for upholding and interpreting SU policy,
  • Union Council Deputy-Chair: Responsible for running democratic forums,
  • UEA Decolonise Campaign Lead and Part of History/PPL Schools’ Decolonising Working-Groups: Supporting student anti-racism efforts, and school based decolonisation,
  • Part of the Reasonable Adjustments Working-Group: Fighting for academic support, pushing for our new 7-day extensions!

Goals and Aims:

There’s still more to do! I will continue to improve your university experience, prioritising issues that affect you day-to-day:

Student Support: Ensuring important things: extensions, appeals, welfare appointment waiting times, are protected and improved,

Improving Campus: Fighting for better facilities: gender-inclusive bathrooms, lifts that work reliably, paths that aren’t blocked by building work. Students should have a campus that meets their needs!

Drugs and Alcohol: Advocating for a harm reduction approach! UEA should look after students,

Building Student Communities: Working with student groups to develop networks that work with and across societies and peer-support groups to build communities that empower student voices,

Open and Accessible SU: Making your Union easy to understand and even easier to access by continuing my work reforming Union structures and processes,

Remember, this is YOUR Student Union; I WILL to continue to support your campaigns, and make sure student voices are heard, and needs are met, prioritising the issues that matter to you!
